People typically leave jobs that are static and tedious because there are no new challenges to face. If boredom leads to daydreaming that sparks creative thinking, that could be a good thing. But if boredom causes you to indulge in dangerous behavior, like substance abuse or self-harm, the results are likely to be bad. About four years in I got a call from someone I knew saying his friend couldn’t stop drinking and had tried to kill himself – and as I was sober would I meet up with him to see if I could help? I was happy to – but I was worried he wasn’t going to make it. He was in a terrible way, shook constantly and attempted suicide again afterwards.
You may need to make other changes
But at home, it’s easy to get a bit too comfortable… you can get a long way down a bottle when you are sitting in front of the TV half-watching some series to pass the time. If, for example, you know you get bored between 2-5 pm, then schedule an enjoyable activity to do during those times. That being said, if you are able to start your sober journey with a feeling of happiness, these challenges can be easily overcome. There is a strong relationship between boredom, stress, and drug or alcohol use. An increasing number of studies show that one way of coping with pandemic-induced stress, boredom, stress or isolation is drinking. Not drinking is a minor note in my life now but there are still judgmental drinking because of boredom people out there. It’s good to take your time before you decide how to navigate a new reality. As the sober years mounted up, I realised that drinking was a symptom of something bigger underneath.
