Coal Ball Mill – For Pulverizing/Grinding of Coal Firing System
Coal ball mill is one of the auxiliary machines of the coal (thermal) power plants and is a vital piece of equipment for the pulverizing and grinding system of coal power plants in order to prepare for firing using special burners.
Application of coal ball mills:
Coal ball mills are widely used in the cement industry and thermal power generation industries, as well as in the metallurgical industry, chemical industry, sugar industry, and other fields. Coal ball mills are also commonly used in the manufacturing process of pulverized coal fuel in calcining kilns such as lime kilns, and the production of pulverized coal raw materials in activated carbon processing.

Coal Ball Mill Details
The raw material of pulverized coal is a coal of various hardness, which is dried in the pulverizing process of the coal mill to obtain the finished pulverized coal that can be burned easily. For coal grinding and pulverizing, a coal ball mill is the main equipment in coal power plants.
Coal Ball Mill Details
The raw coal used to make pulverized coal unavoidably comes across as lean coal or bituminous with high ash content, impure composition, and lower calorific value. Therefore, if the grinding of coal is not good, subsequently the combustion efficiency of coal will be greatly reduced.
High-quality coal pulverizers can effectively solve the problem of fineness of pulverized coal and ensure uniform grinding of raw coal. The fineness of pulverized coal has a great influence on the ignition temperature and burning time of the equipment. In this way, the coal mill can well improve the influence of inferior raw coal on combustion efficiency in coal power plants.
In addition to grinding of coal for coal energy, the coal ball mill can also be used to grind limestone (limestone ball mill), graphite (graphite ball mill) and other materials.
Coal Pulveriser for Coal Energy Generation - Process introduction
The raw material of pulverized coal is a coal of various hardness, which is dried in the pulverizing process of the coal mill to obtain the finished pulverized coal that can be burned efficiently.
Coal ball mill is the key equipment for coal pulverization (grinding) system. The main components of coal ball mill include the: feeding part, discharging part and driving part. The main bearing of coal ball mill is made of cast steel, and the rotating large open girth gear is manufactured by casting and machining.
A coal mill can be divided into low-speed coal mill, medium-speed coal mill, and high-speed coal mill. Energy-saving steel ball mill is a rotating cylindrical drum with steel balls inside. When working, the steel balls in the cylinder keep hitting and squeezing the coal to grind the coal into pulverized coal suitable for burning. The material enters the first chamber of the mill evenly and spirally through the feeding device and the hollow shaft. There are stepped linings or corrugated linings and steel balls of different specifications in the first cabin.
The centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the cylinder brings the steel ball to a certain height, and then the steel ball falls, hitting and grinding the material. After rough grinding in the first bin, the material enters the second bin through the single-wall partition. The second compartment has flat liners and steel balls, where the material is further ground. Finally, the powder is discharged through the discharge grate to complete the grinding operation.
Working Principle of Coal Pulverizer (Grinder)- Coal Ball Mill
The key components of the coal pulverizer used in coal power plants include the: coal feeding part, discharging part, and driving part. The main bearing of the coal pulverizer is made of cast steel, and the rotating large open girth gear is manufactured by casting and machining.
- Raw coal enters the coal pulverizer (ball mill) through the feeding device. Hot air with a temperature in the range of 300℃ enters the coal mill barrel from the intake end pipe of the pulverizer.
- The raw coal falls onto the lifting plates (of pulverizer) of the drying chamber and is raised in a continuous manner.
- During the process of heat exchange between hot air and raw coal, water is continuously evaporated from coal.
- Upon completion of the coal drying process in the coal pulverizer mill, the coal pieces are transferred to the grinding chamber of the pulverizer, and the grinding chamber is rotated to bring up the grinding media steel balls and throw them off.
- After coal is ground for a period of time in a coal pulverizer, the coal turns into a powdery form of material, which then enters the separator.
- After being classified by the mill separator, the coal powder with the required fineness enters the coal powder warehouse.
As stated above coal pulverizer mills are widely used in coal power plants, the cement industry, and the thermal power generation industry, as well as in the metallurgical industry, sugar industry, chemical, and other industries. Coal pulverizers are also commonly used in the manufacturing process of pulverized coal fuel in calcining kilns such as lime kilns, and the production of pulverized coal raw materials in activated carbon processing.
